Normal blood sugar levels for older adults: fasting and after meals
Blood sugar ranges with and without diabetes, how to read a glucometer result in mg/dL, the signs of low sugar every family should know, and what to do.
Glucometers in India and the US show blood sugar in mg/dL. (Some meters use mmol/L; multiply by 18 to get mg/dL.) Whether a number is good depends on two things: whether your parent has diabetes, and when the test was done.
For people without diabetes
These are the ranges the American Diabetes Association uses to diagnose diabetes. A diagnosis needs a lab test, usually repeated, not a single home reading.
| Test | Normal | Prediabetes | Diabetes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fasting (no food for 8 hours) | below 100 | 100 to 125 | 126 or higher |
| 2 hours after a glucose drink (lab test) | below 140 | 140 to 199 | 200 or higher |
| HbA1c (lab test, 3-month average) | below 5.7% | 5.7% to 6.4% | 6.5% or higher |
For parents who have diabetes
The doctor sets the targets. Common targets for adults with diabetes are:
- Before meals: 80 to 130 mg/dL
- 1 to 2 hours after starting a meal: below 180 mg/dL
For many older adults, especially frail parents or those who live alone, doctors set looser targets on purpose, because very low sugar is more dangerous for them than slightly high sugar.
Low sugar: the signs every family should know
Blood sugar below 70 mg/dL is low (hypoglycemia). It can happen with diabetes medicines or insulin, a missed meal, or more activity than usual. Signs include:
- shaking, sweating, a fast heartbeat, hunger
- dizziness, headache, irritability
- confusion, unusual behaviour or sleepiness
Older adults may have only confusion or odd behaviour, without the shaking or sweating.
Very high sugar
Call the doctor the same day if readings keep coming back very high, for example above 300 mg/dL. Get urgent help if high sugar comes with confusion, great thirst with passing a lot of urine, vomiting, or extreme drowsiness.
Getting an accurate reading
- Wash and dry hands first. Sugar on the fingers gives a falsely high result.
- Prick the side of the fingertip, not the middle.
- Use strips before their expiry date, and keep the bottle closed.
- Note whether it was fasting or after a meal; the same number means different things.
With Pariwell, your parent can send a photo of the meter on WhatsApp, or say "sugar 140" in a voice note. Each reading is marked fasting or after a meal and compared with the doctor's targets, and very low or very high readings alert the family straight away.
